I am reading everything's on my Kindle keyboard before I start using my Paperwhite. Came across a whole bunch of books by J D Robb and I have been binging on them this week.

J D Robb, as you probably know, also writes romance as Norah Roberts. Writing as J D Robb, however, her style is darker and grittier.

This is a series of mysteries set in the not too far distant future when the earth has colonized a lot of planets, societal norms have changed in some ways, yet law and order remains law and order and the police are there to protect and serve.

This series chronicles the cases of Eve Dallas as she investigates murders and believes it is her vocation to stand for the dead, to see that they get justice.

In my opinion, a person is going to love these books or hate them, I happen to love them.

Well written, strongly developed characters, detailed plots. Someone is doing research and I appreciate that. Of course, there are some love stories woven in because that is part of life, after all, it can't be all grim.

In this one, Eve is trying to stop a terrorist organization from destroying the capitalist symbols of New York. I noticed with sadness tinged with irony that the Twin Towers were on the list of targets - sorry, Ms. Roberts, another terrorist group beat you to them.

Anyway, another good story, but even better were the personal stories. Peabody and McNabb have been dancing around each other for several books now - all that sexual tension was finally consummated in this one. Yeehaw! Also, we get to meet one of Peabody's brothers.

Unfortunately, though, Summerset (one of my favorite secondary characters) barely got a mention. Better luck next time!
I consider myself an advid reader and a huge fan of Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb. It amazes me that I never get bored with her writing. This happens to be the longest series that I’ve ever began to read and it’s just as exciting as the previous books. Some series require that details are left untold until the following book is read and therefore the reader is compelled to purchase said books. On the other hand, Robb doesn’t need to lead the readers on so to speak because her Work speaks volumes. Every book that I’ve read in the series could be a stand-alone book, but I love how she ties the memories and flashbacks of Eve’s to give the reader a clearer sense of who the real Eve is. What a great read!
I’ve read most of the In Death series as they have come out since the 1990s. I’ve missed one or two along the way. So this winter I thought my pleasure reading would be on starting from the beginning. It has been a great read.

But Loyalty in Death has been off the charts for characterization, arching plot, action and sheer fun.

It starts with what seems to be a straightforward killing of passion but becomes a complicated terrorist plot.
Along the way the characters of Roarke, Eve, Peabody and McNab all expand and grow with the deft talent of Nora Roberts, writing, of course, as J. D. Robb. Mavis, too, reveals a side we have not seen before that is touching.

With my I have found myself highlighting character growth in blue, police procedures in yellow, critical action in red, and nostalgia for my old hometown in orange. And taking notes or making comments to myself such the last gasp of cigarettes as swank; the lack of DNA analysis in the early books; and how the Twin Towers make a brief appearance—-no one anticipated 9/11.

We learn more about Peabody, her family and the Free-Agers as well as meet her youngest brother, Zeke.

This is a pivotal book in the series and an exciting page turner. I highly recommend it.
FINAL DECISION Loved this book because of the great development in the characters and the relationships. The mystery was good and I liked that there was a sense of urgency that moved the story along.

THE STORY Eve's newest criminal is a bomber by the name of Cassandra who intends to brag about the crime by sending letters to Eve to engage her. Eve must race the clock to find out the motives of the bomber before those she cares about are the target.

OPINION The highlight of this book is really the character development that happens. Eve and Roarke are on fire in this one. I prefer when Eve and Roarke are working closely in the stories. Yes, she is a cop and shouldn't be relying on her husband all the time, but I read these books more for the relationships than the mysteries so I want to see more of Eve and Roarke together as much as possible.

In this book, Peabody is a significant part of the story as her brother comes to visit and gets into some trouble of his own. I liked that the series is branching out and making other characters have significant story lines of their own.

The mystery in this case is a bit strange, but well constructed as things end up fitting together in the end.

CONNECTED BOOKS LOYALTY IN DEATH is the ninth book in the In Death series. Each book in this series has a self-contained mystery although there are ongoing character development issues throughout the series. This particular book, however, can be read as a standalone.
