The Doona trilogy of books is my second most favorite series Anne McCaffrey has written, next to her Talent universe (which consists of two series: the "Talent" series which is a prequel trilogy, and "The Tower and the Hive" series which consists of five books). I love the Doona series for its wonderful characters, the interesting and realistic depiction of colonizing a planet given in the context of the political and social context of a future Earth. The pacing of the development of the colony and especially characters, as well as respective home worlds in relation to Doona were interesting, engrossing and fun.

When I finished the last book in the series, it was so good that I seriously mourned the end of this series and its characters as I have real people in my life. This series of books had everything in them I cherish about life, learning and growing that I've found in my favorite Anne McCaffrey series, such as the true meaning of friendship, redemption, perseverance, self-sacrifice for the greater good, wisdom and humor.

I was so glad that Anne McCaffrey continued writing about Doona. As you might notice, she wrote the second and third books in the trilogy over two decades later and with a co-author Jody Lynn Nye.

I first read this book about 35 years ago or so. And I loved it. And I still do.
All I can say, is that Anne Mccaffery was genius.
It's a simple story written with the brevity that was prevalent in science fiction back then. Anne Mccaffery is probably most well known for her Pern stories, and rightly so, but she wrote troves of other stories in other worlds. This is just one of the gems, and a good starting point for anyone new the her material.
Very familiar with many of Anne McCaffrey's worlds and storylines so loved this one too, first read many years ago and was worth reading again, a lot of stories take place after mankind has ventured out into the stars I really love the fact that this starts with a very crowded Earth and cramped living conditions with limited resources because that is exactly what will make mankind willing to take that next step despite the problems that can occur and like always mankind is up for it!
Read this first when I was much younger and enjoyed it just as much this time around. 😃 Even remember how peeved I was that she kept calling the veterinarian a veterinary. 😣 Sadly, the scan to import to wasn’t great. Lots of rn-to-m kinds of things, as well as missing or wrong punctuation (commas to periods and vice versa). Makes parsing structure a pain and blows the reading flow. 😢
The beginning of the Doona series. This is a great YA novel but after rereading numerous times and now into my 50s, some of the support cast are just plain cardboard. Which is fine, if I was reading as kid, but dry as I get older. Buy if you want to complete your McCaffrey collection.
I first read this story when I was a youth. Those days are long past. I write my own novels now and wanted to see how close my style was to this great author. You'll have to check for that answer on your own. But to the point of my review of this story. Like I found it so long ago, it was pleasantly entertaining and subtle upon the social dialogue that Anne was conveying. The characters were interesting and engaging. A great read for all ages.
To me, the worst aspect of this book was the patriarchal nature of the male/female social roles. And I really don't understand why McCaffrey was stuck there when Andre Norton--a much older writer--had managed to move beyond the culture of the time. But no, Decision at Doona has an all male leadership in both alien and human cultures, while human men do all work outside the home, human women do all the cooking and childrearing, plus there's the classic female=passive nurturer, male=active provider nonsense. It was disappointing, as was McCaffrey's failure to include any speculation about how technology might develop in her future. Instead she just uses the computer tapes and printouts of the sixties--something that's decidedly quaint sounding even now, much less in a future set hundreds of years from now. For me too, the story wasn't good enough to outweigh the book's evident issues, so this was a real clunker.
I have loved McCaffrey's Pern books, all of them, for a long time and have just finished rereading them and love them even more now, part of my mind seems to be stuck in the world of Pern. I also love cats so I thought this book might be purrty interesting, if you get my meaning. The concept was interesting. Too often humans think other life forms are going to look sort of like human beings as evidenced by Close Encounters of the 3d Kind and others like it. McCaffrey doesn't venture far from that same standard. But anyhow, it was an interesting concept although having government administrators radically opposed to Doona doesn't make any sense--it cost a LOT of money to send anyone out in space and this trip was a substantial one so why would any official allow it and then try to sabotage it? I'm only on the second book in the series but this attitude continues on 25 years later! Hold a grudge much?? After spending a little more than a month breathing and thinking of Pern as I re-read the whole series including the offshoots, I couldn't figure out what else to read after the last Pern book so hoped some of her other writings would satisfy but although she writes well, she has very few of those leaps of faith her son puts into his stories, this Doona series lacks something, doesn't grab me and pull me into their world, and for me reading is all about escape from my own life into whatever the story offers.
