I'm not a pacifist, but on this conscientious objectors' day, I was almost convinced by Ronald Skirth. He coolly describes the horrors of the First World War, his own thoughtful conversion into a CO and how he continued to serve while living up to his deep-seated objection to killing. The enemy, as far as he was concerned, were just like himself, human beings with ordinary decent loves and ambitions. The story of himself and his girl-friend at home, Ella, is told with vividness and compassion. Duncan Barrett has edited his long rambling memoir beautifully to make it into a memorable read. He contributes an interesting and thought-provoking introduction. Skirth's own postscript is a sustained defence of the conscientious objectors' position and includes a telling argument against war memorials that praise men for "giving" their lives: they had then taken from them, they were robbed, they lost the lives they might later have lead.
